Battle of Cable Street

A clash between the British Union of Fascists (BUF), who were attempting to carry out a march through Whitechapel, London, and anti-fascist groups on 4 October 1936. Approximately 20,000 anti-fascist protestors turned out to protest against the march, facing 2000-3000 members of the BUF, who were supported by 6,000-7,000 police officers. After significant confrontation, the march was eventually called off by Oswald Mosley, leader of the BUF.
