Białystok Ghetto Uprising

Białystok Ghetto Uprising

An uprising that took place in the Białystok Ghetto on 16 August 1943 following deportation announcements. The uprising aimed to overwhelm German forces and allow ghetto inhabitants to escape to the nearby Knyszyn forest. The uprising held out for several days, but was soon broken by the German forces. Whilst a few of the ghetto inhabitants managed to escape, the mass deportations to concentration and extermination camps went ahead as planned.
