The Polish government-in-exile was formed in September 1939 after the Nazi invasion of Poland. Many of the high-ranking politicians and army officials fled Poland, first to France, and then to Britain in 1940. From their exile, they were treated as an authoritative body by the Allied powers and exerted influence over the Polish underground and resistance movements during the war.
