Raphael Lemkin

Raphael Lemkin (24 June 1900 – 28 June 1959) was a Polish lawyer of Jewish descent. During the Second World War, Lemkin fled Poland and in 1941 found refuge in the United States. During the Holocaust, 49 of Lemkin’s relatives were murdered. After the war, Lemkin coined the term ‘genocide’, which was adopted by the United Nations in 1948.
